Helping Others Find Support

Not sure when to refer someone to One-on-One Care, a counselor, or a pastor? We’ve put together this chart as a guide.

One-on-One Care

Mild to moderate emotional, spiritual, or relational matters.

Examples:

  • Grief after loss of a loved one
  • Divorce or separation
  • Unemployment or job stress
  • Chronic illness (self or loved one)
  • Discouragement, loneliness, or spiritual struggles
  • Life transitions (retirement, empty nest, relocation)

Counseling

Severe or high-risk emotional, spiritual, or relational matters.

Examples

  • Mental health or emotional disorder (e.g., anxiety, severe depression, bipolar disorder, schizophrenia)
  • Severe trauma or PTSD
  • Abuse, addiction, or self-harm (e.g., abuse or violence, substance abuse, or active suicidal thoughts). Refer to counseling and a pastor for care.

Pastoral Care

Severe or high-risk emotional, spiritual, or relational matters.

Examples:

  • Spiritual or theological crisis requiring pastoral guidance (e.g., someone just died, trauma, end-of-life)
  • Marriage or moral dilemma (e.g., considering divorce). Have a pastor provide care and they can refer them to counseling if needed.
  • Abuse, addiction, or self-harm. Refer to counseling and a pastor for care.

Volunteer Resources

Below, you’ll find resources to strengthen your confidence and deepen your impact as you serve. Most are designed to help you better understand what someone might be going through based on their situation. Others will equip you to walk alongside someone deciding to follow Jesus or to feel more confident praying with others—especially in life’s most challenging moments.

If there’s a resource you’d find helpful that isn’t listed, please reach out to your staff leader. We’re here to support you as you care for others!
